My group and I made the water pump for MAE 2250 Mechanical Synthesis at Cornell University. For this project, we needed to design and manufacture a water pump that pumps at least a gallon of water up one meter in one minute. The set up that we needed to interface with included only a metal plate (on which to mount the pump) as well as a gear that received power from an external source. Groups needed to design their pump drive shafts to interface with the gear. The pump needed to fit within a 14" cube, and supplies couldn't cost more than $30. With these constraints in mind, my group and I designed and manufactured the pump you see below. I played a central role in coming up with the design, creating the CAD, and machining the parts using manual lathes and mills. This process is described in the images below. For more detail, you can also download our group's report. Lastly, the video of our pump pumping water is shown here.
This is one of many sketches concepting forms the pump could take. I put a heavy focus on drawing parts how they would look after being machined.
